Psalm 4 ranks among the more interpretatively challenging biblical texts, whose meaning remains disputed despite the sustained attention of numerous scholars over many years. The difficulties are compounded by divergences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint. Modern exegesis spans a wide spectrum: some read the psalm as a rebuke to idolaters, others as the psalmist’s defence against slander; some view it as the protest of the poor against wealthy exploiters, while others interpret it as a royal attempt to enforce obedience among subjects. A striking illustration of these challenges is found in the “righteous sacrifices”...

The study examines the quotation concerning the weeping Rachel (Jer 31:15) in the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 2:18). It compares the Hebrew and Greek versions of the verse within the so-called Book of Consolation (Jer 30–31) and considers the different in- terpretations of the expression ברמה (“in Ramah” / “on high”). It also takes into accounts later rabbinic texts in which Rachel is portrayed as an intercessor for the exiles and for all of Israel. Although this motif is not explicit in Matthew’s Gospel, the quotation forms part of a carefully constructed intertextual composition...

Personified wisdom, which is part of wisdom literature (Prov, Sir, Wis), has been historically linked to the understanding of Jesus in Paul’s undisputed letters. This connection was eventually denied. The aim of this article is to examine the related textual passages, the associated interpretations of prominent scholars, and to answer the question: Why does the apostle Paul not use the concept of σοφία in connection with Jesus? The answer is found in Paul’s apocalyptic thinking and in the figure of the New Adam. The figure of Wisdom is relevant only in a harmonious world that is not radically corrupt, as described...

The study critically examines the historical development of the Catholic Church’s teachings on therapeutic abortion, and analyses how the prohibition of these procedures gradually evolved, focusing on the late nineteenth century when the issue became the subject of intense debate among theologians and Church authorities. It analyses five key decrees issued by the Holy Office between 1884 and 1902, which progressively tightened restrictions on these procedures. The study provides a complete translation and detailed critical analysis of these decrees. The author traces how Church authorities addressed issues such as craniotomy, induced premature...

This article discusses the philosophical-theological concept of freedom in the work of Karel Vrána (1924‒2005) and focuses in particular on the contrast between transcendence and immanence of the human spirit. In response to the atheistic protest against God, it is of importance to clarify the concept of God’s transcendence, which neither disparages the world nor threatens man in his earthly decisions and actions. In the article, the author examines and analyses Vrána’s reflections on the relationship between transcendence and immanence in human existence, presents various models of human freedom, and deals with the dialogical-personal...

This article examines the philosophical concepts of Immanuel Kant and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin as two distinct yet complementary frameworks for reflecting on freedom, knowledge, and responsibility in the context of global challenges. Kant conceives freedom as the autonomy of reason grounded in the moral imperative, while Teilhard understands it as an evolutionary process and the individual’s participation in transcendent unification – the Omega Point (God). By interweaving their ontological, epistemological, and ethical perspectives, the article proves that the legacy of both thinkers constitutes a call to integrate reason, ethics, and...

The ecclesiastical history of Ung county is still a completely unexplored area of history. In the context of the research, there are several sources that help create a picture of church structures, i.e. parishes, branches, mother church and daughter church congregations. Such a picture is provided by the inventory from 1733, the content analysis of which is the subject of this study. The aim of the contribution is to more closely characterise the content of the document, as well as to provide primary information. The analysis is not carried out exhaustively, but instead focuses on basic information and specifics. A detailed summary of the individual...

The study deals with the development and dynamics of the religious and church agenda in the free and democratic environment of the first Czechoslovak Republic and after 1989. It focuses on selected topics – the separation of churches from the state, relations between the state and churches, the form of state and religious holidays and changes in family and marriage law, among other things in the context of the existence of the Rokkan cleavage state versus church. In the comparative part, it emphasises the search for continuities and discontinuities in the public activities of religious institutions.
