"Svoboda" v listu Galaťanům

"Freedom" in the Letter to the Galatians

Ladislav Tichý

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):1-16

Paul's Letter to the Galatians is very often characterized as the "Magna Carta of Christian freedom". The article investigates to what extent this designation is justified and what the Apostle Paul was thinking of when he spoke of freedom in this letter. We must suppose that from the beginning of the letter Paul had in mind the main issue he wanted to persuade the addressees of, namely that the only way to attain justification before God is the way of faith in Jesus Christ, not the way of fulfilling the works of the law (cf. Gal 2:16). The Apostle must have seen this way of faith as a space that gives the freedom to live in Spirit. Although Paul's...

Royal priesthood in the First Epistle of Peter and in the Revelation of John

Mireia Ryšková

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):17-32

The texts from 1 Peter and the Book of Revelation show that the words about the kingdom of priests are firstly intended to strengthen Christians' consciousness of their dignity during a time of persecution and to assure them of God's sovereignty turning upside down the logic and order of this world. The task of Christians as the new people of God is to hold fast to their holy, god-given calling. The biblical authors express this sanctity with the help of images and metaphors from the Old Testament: "kingdom of priests", "royal priesthood" etc., and apply them to Christians. In their situation of persecution and danger it was necessary to underline...

Pseudo-Anthimus, On the Holy Church: A Witness of the Polemic of Marcellus of Ancyra with Eusebians?

Pavel Dudzik

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):33-50

The article deals with a short polemical treatise De sancta ecclesia (SE). It offers a translation of the whole treatise into Czech and an analysis of SE, especially of its second half, in which the teaching of the Arians and the Eusebians is rejected. In the prologue of SE, the one Catholic church is distinguishes from heresies. A catalogue of older heresies follows, in which the author of SE sees the origins of the wrong Arian and Eusebian opinions. In the second half of SE, several Arian and Eusebian expressions and statements are condemned. Each of the statements is linked with a statement of an older heretic. SE could hardly be written before...

Catholic and non-catholic reactions of the First Vatican Council in the South Bohemian metropolis

Rudolf Svoboda

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):51-63

This study deals with the First Vatican Council in the context of regional history. It demonstrates how the council was perceived by Catholics and mainly by non-Catholics in České Budějovice. Strongly represented by the bishop Jan Valerián Jirsík, Catholics were the majority in this town. In 1867-1868, after announcement of total religious freedom and equality in civil life, a minority admitted a non-catholic confession. The most active group was so called German Lutherans, which actively joined the religious life in the town. They found a support in one of the three metropolitan newspapers, called Anzeiger aus dem südlichen Böhmen (Bulletin from the...

Jan Nepomuk Neumann in the Mirror of Czech Hagiography: Roman Catholic Religiosity of the 19th Century and Some Developments of Its Reflection

Martin C. Putna

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):64-82

The beatification process of John Nepomuk Neumann started already in the late 19the century. Today however his popularity in the Czech lands is still very low. The article offers an analysis of hagiographic and other biographic texts of Czech provenience. Firstly, of the texts about history of Czech settlement in the USA. Secondly, of the Czech hagiography, both the official and the published in samizdat or in exile only. Particular attention is paid to the attempt of Petr Piťha to create an "intellectual hagiography". The apparent lack of individual and original traces in all the portraits of J. N. Neumann is a consequence of the hidden agenda of...

Conditions of Exclusion of the Sacramental Dignity of Marriage

Marie Kolářová

Studia Theologica 2010, 12(4):83-94

According to the teaching of our church, a matrimonial contract between baptized persons cannot validly exist without a church-sanctioned sacrament. If the spouses do not want to receive sacramentality, they cannot validly contract marriage. According to one part of canonists, the refusal of sacramental dignity necessary leads to non-existence of marriage itself - better no marriage if no sacrament. The second part of canonists maintains that spouses are allowed to exclude only the church-sanctioned sacrament in the same way as another essential element or essential property. This article is focused on the question how to view a situation when baptized...
