The Corporeality of Souls, Angels, and Demons According to the Earliest Christian Authors

Veronika Hrůšová

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):1-22 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.02745

The statements of the early Church Fathers on the corporeality of human souls, angels, and demons refer to biblical and philosophical sources and were very often formulated in dialogue with Valentinian Gnosticism. The present article examines the concepts of the corporeality of souls and spiritual beings as evidenced in the works of Christian authors of the second and third centuries. It also examines the reasons why this topic was of such significance to these authors and the motivation behind their decision to address it in their writings.

The Interconnection between Freedom and Obedience in the Human Response to God’s Call as Both Risk and Opportunity for Spiritual Maturation

Barbora Šmejdová

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):23-32 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.02058

This paper explores the relationship between obedience and freedom as constitutive elements of the human response to the Word of God. Together with Dorothee Sölle, it critically reflects on authoritarian interpretations of obedience which suppress subjectivity and lead to distortions in theological anthropology, Christology, and spirituality. It presents, in contrast, the Marian model of free obedience, as developed by Adrienne von Speyr: a form of self-surrender that does not undermine personal integrity, but enables deeper participation in God’s life. The paper calls for a renewed theological understanding of obedience within the analogy...

Proposals for the Refinement of Theological Terminology in Slovak. Part Six

Jozef Krupa

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):33-49 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.01642

The study “Proposals for the Refinement of Theological Terminology in Slovak: Part Six” examines the inaccuracy of the Slovak term stvorenie (“creation” – creatio ex nihilo) in relation to beings that did not come into existence through stvorenie, i.e. God’s act of bringing things into existence from nothing, but rather through tvorenie (“forming” – creatio ex materia or formatio), i.e. from pre-existing matter and through the actions of other creatures. This issue appears in certain magisterial, liturgical, and theological texts. The study analyses the...

Häringův Das Gesetz Christi a jeho němečtí předchůdci

Häring’s Das Gesetz Christi and Its German Predecessors

Jan Polák

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):51-80 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.02241

Häring’s manual Das Gesetz Christi is a groundbreaking work in the field of moral theology, which can be seen as the successful culmination of long-standing efforts to renew it by the theologians of the so-called Tübingen School. This work seeks to place Das Gesetz Christi systematically in a broader context. It first introduces the life circumstances of its author, then provides a brief description of the so-called manuals, outlines the efforts to revive moral theology in a pan-European context using Odon Lottin as an example, and then focuses on the individual German theologians who most influenced Häring, including, in particular,...

Transrodoví ľudia a ľudská dôstojnosť v katolíckej teológii

Transgender People and Human Dignity in Catholic Theology

Ľubomír Batka

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):81-102 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.02567

The discourse on transgender identity within the Catholic Church reveals a fundamental tension between the official magisterial teaching and emerging theological currents that prioritize a pastoral sensibility and the affirmation of human dignity. Official documents such as Dignitas infinita and Male and Female He Created Them reject the differentiation between gender and biological sex, framing it as a component of so-called “gender ideology,” interpreting gender transition as a threat to the natural order. In contrast, numerous theologians and ecclesial groups advocate for a more empathetic and contextually informed approach—one...

Cesta k zmiereniu: Filozoficko-teologické základy mediácie

The Path to Reconciliation: Philosophical and Theological Foundations of Mediation

Miroslav Karaba

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):103-124 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.01874

The article analyses the philosophical and theological foundations of mediation as a tool for conflict resolution and fostering reconciliation in the context of contemporary societal challenges. Drawing inspiration from models in pastoral theology, it develops and presents a three-stage model of mediation, consisting of anamnesis, reflection, and intervention. This model integrates theoretical reflections based on philosophical concepts of justice and harmony with the theological emphasis on forgiveness and human dignity. It formulates a methodology of mediation and provides a framework for sustainable practical solutions. Mediation is understood...

Miloš David

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):125-148 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2024.02945

The present article aims to summarize factors which led to the formation of Coptic identity in Late Ancient Egypt. The main aim of the paper is to deal with the most important issues which were shaping this unique Christian culture in Egypt. One can trace not only the rudiments of the Coptic Orthodox Church, but Christianity in Africa in general in Egypt in Late antiquity. The first part consists of a brief introduction to the period of Egyptian history when Christianity emerged in Alexandria and its relationship with the local Jewish community. The second part engages with Shenoute of Atripe who is considered the first Coptic nationalist and the most...

Osud kresťanstva podľa Friedricha Nietzscheho

The Fate of Christianity According to Friedrich Nietzsche

Matej Ferjanc

Studia Theologica 2025, 27(3):149-169 | DOI: 10.5507/sth.2025.02136

The subject of the article is Nietzsche’s reflection on the relationship between Christianity and nihilism. Nietzsche’s reflections in this direction remained unfinished. Therefore, the study, based on Nietzsche’s sketch of the work The Will to Power, as well as on a number of older and newer interpretations, provides an analytical and systematic reconstruction of the argumentation that Nietzsche can offer in favour of his two theses on the relationship between Christianity and nihilism. The first thesis: nihilism in the European space is a consequence of the disappearance of Christian faith in God. The second thesis:...
